David Axlerod Knows Hillary is more Experienced

Sometimes I wonder how political campaign staff people sleep at night knowing the difference between what is truth and what is just a political game.

Obama's Narrator

This, Axelrod says, is what Karl Rove understood about George W. Bush. "One of the reasons Bush has succeeded in two elections," Axelrod says, "is that in his own rough-hewn way he has conveyed a sense of this is who I am, warts and all." For Obama, because of Senator Hillary Clinton's far-greater experience and establishment backing, this is a particularly essential project. "If we run a conventional campaign and look like a conventional candidacy, we lose," Axelrod says.

The Axelrod's, Susan and David, must feel at times that they are 'sleeping with the enemy.'

Today, as Axelrod basks in his profession's highest glory -- shaping a historical presidential campaign -- he is experiencing one of its nastiest turns: in a tiny and ideologically promiscuous world, you often need to go to war with your friends. (If Obama hadn't run, Axelrod says, he would have sat out this presidential race, and he says he told all of his other former clients that early on; he hasn't had much interaction with them since.) There is Dodd, and there is Edwards, but perhaps most poignantly, there is Hillary Clinton. It's a matter of epilepsy. David and Susan Axelrod have three children in their late teens and early 20s. Their eldest, Lauren, has developmental disabilities associated with chronic epileptic seizures and now lives in a group home in Chicago. But for years her illness required enough of her parents' time that it kept Susan Axelrod out of the work force and kept David from moving to Little Rock during the 1992 presidential campaign.

Susan and two other mothers of children with epilepsy started a foundation, Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE), which Susan runs, to promote research and raise funds for a cure. Because of David's political work, they have had political celebrities do fund-raisers: Bill Clinton, Tim Russert, Obama. But few have done as much for the foundation as Hillary Clinton.

It was January 1999, President Clinton's impeachment trial was just beginning in the Senate and Hillary Clinton was scheduled to speak at the foundation's fund-raiser in Chicago. Despite all the fuss back in Washington, Clinton kept the appointment. She spent hours that day in the epilepsy ward at Rush Presbyterian hospital, visiting children hooked up to machines by electrodes so that doctors might diagram their seizure activity and decide which portion of the brain to remove. At the hospital, a local reporter pressed her about the trial in Washington, asked her about that woman. At the organization's reception at the Drake Hotel that evening, Clinton stood backstage looking over her remarks, figuring out where to insert anecdotes about the kids. "She couldn't stop talking about what she had seen," Susan Axelrod recalled. Later, at Hillary Clinton's behest, the National Institutes of Health convened a conference on finding a cure for epilepsy. Susan Axelrod told me it was "one of the most important things anyone has done for epilepsy."

And this is how politics works: David Axelrod is now dedicated to derailing this woman's career.

Sweet dreams David.

Re: Politics..It's about Character (1.75 / 4)

Clinton clearly has more experience, as those low-level state department employees quickly saw when they snooped at Obama's passport. Let's see--Obama's never been anywhere but Africa; not to Europe, not to Asia, not to South America, not to Central America. Oh, sure, Indonesia, as a kid for a couple of years. And, Africa. Hillary Clinton's traveled to more than 80 countries, China? Check. Europe? Check. The Balkans? Check. Been there, done that.

But, it's really all about CHARACTER. This is a woman who actually cares about others; who dedicates herself to doing for others, who determines that she will be there for others, no matter how difficult the scheduling, the competing crises, the personal costs.

This is a woman who fights for those who ask her to be there for them.

Obama is a man who fights for....Obama.

His only interest is himself; he votes 'present' when forced to choose to fight for something; he skips votes he says later were crucial votes (Kyl-Lieberman) and he uses the cynical "mistake" excuse on votes he makes that are surrepticious lies about his positions! Obama makes speeches about values he cannot be bothered to back up with actions. A man who calculates voter disenfranchisement in Florida and Michigan because it benefits him to do so.

Obama is a hypocrite, a shallow narcissist, a person who never takes a stand except for himself, but is always showing up just in time take credit for everything he never bothered to do; a cynic who divides a party by slyly injecting racial divisions and then claiming he's a victim of it; a man who brags about his 'judgment' except when he's trying to avoid accountability by calling his judgment 'boneheaded.'

THIS is a man without character.

Re: David Axlerod Knows Hillary (2.00 / 2)

Remember that time when Obama was a community organizer in Chicago and he put together a record breaking voter registration drive to help Bill Clinton get elected? No?

Hey, how about that time the Clinton campaign went over Obama's "shady" financial contributions to superdelegates up for reelection through his PAC even though one of those superdelegates his PAC contributed election funds to was named Senator Hillary Clinton? Remember that one?

Yeah, Axelrod is real slime. This sort of thing doesn't just happen all the time in politics or anything.

What's experience got to do with it? (2.00 / 1)

I don't think anybody has questioned whether Hillary has spent more time in Washington.  What we question is whether that time has made her more suited to be president.

Re: What's experience got to do with it? (none / 0)

But thats the beauty of these comments. Axelrod didn't say "oh well she has more experience if..." he flat out admitted she had more experience.

I don't think its a campaign ender but its a gaffe nonetheless

Why? Clinton is running on experience, Obama is not.

Re: That's Laughable (2.00 / 1)

Not only has Clinton spent more time in Washington, navigating and fighting for others in our political system, she's spent more time traveling around the world [80 countries] navigating and fighting for others in their own political systems. The experience, and understanding of foreign affairs and geo-political relationships she gained by doing that is, without question, a qualification we should demand in a President, a world leader, particularly now.

Barack Obama was "too busy running for President" to hold even one hearing of a sub-committee he chaired on European Affairs.

Honestly, the credulousness of Obama supporters is astonishing. Even Barack Obama admits he is staging political theatre:

Mr. Obama has said of himself, "I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views . . ."

You're being taken for a ride, and you are jumping on the hay wagon like a bunch of happy hayseeds looking forward to the trip! You are buying the car from the used car salesman--David Axelrod--and you have no idea what's under the hood.

I have frankly been amazed and astonished at the stupidity of american voters since 2000. In the face of all evidence, they continue to steadfastly believe in political fantasy over reality. I never thought progressives were so deluded, but I have been proven wrong. David Axelrod knew how to play you, and play you he has.

Re: That's Laughable (none / 0)

Of course, Hillary's experience is somehting that should be recognized and appreciated.  But this same experience led Hillary to support one of stupidest foreign policy decisions in the 232 year history of our country.  That's something that should also be recognized, shouldn't it?

This same amazing woman who knows the ins and outs of Washington has what legislation to her name (and don't give me S-Chip that was done with her support, but she was not the main force driving it)?  This neophyte that you and other Clinton supporters deride has a major piece of legislation that he lead on: ethics reform.  This legislation was a major piece of the Six in '06 promise of Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama was the point person in the Senate for this legislation.

So perhaps experience is not the be all and end all. Or else Abraham Lincoln would have been a shitty president and James Buchanan would have been outstanding.

Bold <> Quotation Marks (2.00 / 1)

The New York Times "journalist" inserts opinion:

...because of Senator Hillary Clinton's far-greater experience and establishment backing...

How can you tell? Because there are no quotation marks around it. We have no idea if Axelrod believes that or not. He wasn't quoted, he didn't say it. Media bias? Oh yeah. Bolding doesn't change anything.

I'd still like someone to explain to me how Hillary Clinton has more experience than Barack Obama. By what measure? More Senate experience? Yes. More experience serving in elective office? No, Obama has. Faced more elections? No, Obama has.

Re: David Axlerod Knows (2.00 / 2)

I'm not surprised. Axlerod has developed a marketing campaign selling "change" - Obama is the salesman. It really does come down to power grabs and politics as usual. I find it striking that a community (progressives) that prides itself on it's anti-corporate stance has bought into a mass marketed product. The irony is staggering.

These remarks are both vague and vacuous.  Could you possibly be specific and explain what you are talking about?

I'm sorry that Obama's Republican attacks against Clinton, Rezko, NAFTA-gate, the Pastor disaster, and all of Team Obama's race baiting have flown over your head. Ax's marketing campaign kool-aid must be at least 80 proof.

Oh, and by the way, what does the very experienced Bill Richardson think about all this?

Hmmm...I guess he's endorsing Barack Obama.

Obama echos Axelrod, Hillary more experienced (2.00 / 1)

In Obama's interview with Anderson Cooper on March 19, 2007, Obama said the he "probably wasn't going to win" running a conventional campaign on experience.
Well, you know, one of the things I said early on in this campaign was, if I was just running the textbook campaign, doing the conventional thing, I probably wasn't going to win, because Senator Clinton was going to be much more capable of doing that than I would be.

by grlpatriot on Fri Mar 21, 2008 at 11:05:28 AM EST

Thank you. (2.00 / 2)

This is a very interesting diary.  I just keep wondering what the Axlerods, Richardsons, Kerrys, Teddy, et al are getting out of all of this.  Is it that they are just not treated with enough defference by the Clintons and with Obama being a "Bargainer" he knows how to kiss up to these people and they are orgasmic over it.  I don't get it but I do know one thing:  Hillary has excellent KARMA!  In the end, cheaters do not win and Obama IS a cheater.  I don't know how or when but I have complete confidence that in the words of the prescient Rev. Wright:  "The chickens WILL come home to roost!"

Thank you for the thougt-provoking diary.  Recommended.
